Stewart Geddes tuvo la gentileza de conversar con nosotros recientemente sobre su participaci\u00f3n en el arte de tapa de Strange Dance<\/a><\/em>, el nuevo \u00e1lbum solista de Philip Selway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Geddes y Selway se conocieron originalmente a trav\u00e9s de la esposa de Philip, Cait, que estudi\u00f3 Bellas Artes en la escuela de arte de Cheltenham, donde Geddes trabajaba como profesor. Las canciones de Strange Dance<\/em> comenzaron a tomar forma durante el aislamiento provocado por la pandemia de Covid-19. Durante este per\u00edodo, ambos artistas continuaron el contacto de manera virtual: \u00abcada dos o tres semanas nos conect\u00e1bamos via Zoom desde nuestros estudios. Hablamos sobre diversos temas creativos y Philip mencion\u00f3 su \u00e1lbum y me pregunt\u00f3 si quer\u00eda hacer el arte visual.
Philip le envi\u00f3 a Stewart versiones tempranas de las canciones, a las que comenz\u00f3 a reaccionar en el lienzo. \u00abRespond\u00eda al tono, el humor y el espacio de las canciones, y dejaba que las pinturas encuentren una manera de relacionarse con ellas. Esta es la idea de tres de las cuatro pinturas que ser\u00e1n usadas, pero una, ‘Canaro’ [que pod\u00e9s ver m\u00e1s abajo], fue una respuesta directa a la visita al estudio de grabaci\u00f3n en las afueras de Oxford\u00bb. Recuerda un d\u00eda en el que la productora Marta Salogni estaba escuchando versiones terminadas de los temas junto a Philip y los m\u00fasicos invitados Adrian Utley y Hannah Peel. En un momento, Utley fue a la sala de grabaci\u00f3n en el cuarto contiguo para agregar sonidos de guitarra a una canci\u00f3n. \u00abEstoy acostumbrado a visitar estudios de artistas, pero no de grabaci\u00f3n, y me impact\u00f3 la intimidad de estos cuartos, el desorden de cables y la ropa de los m\u00fasicos. Philip ten\u00eda puesta una remera rosa, y por eso hay un poco de rosa en la parte superior de la pintura; tambi\u00e9n hay mucho naranja y eso es por el cabello de Hannah. Adrian inspir\u00f3 el color rojo brillante con sus extraordinarios sonidos de guitarra\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inevitablemente, el nombre de Stanley Donwood surgi\u00f3 durante nuestra conversaci\u00f3n, pero la producci\u00f3n de Geddes y de Donwood son fundamentalmente diferentes: el primero es m\u00e1s abstracto mientras que el segundo es m\u00e1s figurativo. A pesar de la relaci\u00f3n \u00edntima de Donwood con el aspecto visual de Radiohead, Geddes coment\u00f3 que la idea nunca fue seguir un estilo o enfoque similar. \u00abMi obra comenz\u00f3 con paisajes pero ha progresado a una forma m\u00e1s aut\u00f3noma de pintura abstracta. Aunque Geddes es un artista reconocido en su \u00e1mbito, con una frondosa carrera en pintura, esta fue la primera vez que colabor\u00f3 con un m\u00fasico en un proyecto similar. Si la emoci\u00f3n en su voz durante la conversaci\u00f3n nos permite deducir algo, es que probablemente esta experiencia no sea la \u00faltima.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stewart Geddes was so kind to grant ExitMusicAr a Q&A session recently, to discuss his involvement in the artwork for Strange Dance<\/a><\/em>, Philip Selway’s new album.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Geddes and Selway initially met through Philip’s wife – Cait – who was a student on the Fine Art degree course at Cheltenham art school where Geddes taught. The two artists became friends through art at the beginning, as well as everyday things like having children of similar ages and football – though not supporters of the same team. Selway is an Oxford United supporter and Geddes is a West Ham fan, and early in their friendship they attended a match between their teams in Oxford. Unfortunately for Geddes, Oxford United thrashed West Ham that day. \u00abPerhaps Philip thinks I bring luck to Oxford United now?\u00bb, he jokes. These common passions added a new level to their relationship, and then Selway bought some of Geddes’ work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The songs for Strange Dance<\/em> started to come to life during the pandemic, when both stayed in touch during lockdown. \u00abEvery two or three weeks or so we’d Zoom each other from our respective studios. We chatted about our various creative stuff, and then Philip mentioned his album and asked if I would like to do the visuals for it\u00bb.
Philip sent Stewart early stages of the songs, to which he started reacting in the canvas. \u00abI was responding to the tone and mood and space in the songs, and allowing the paintings to find their relationship with it. Three of the four paintings that are being used hold these ideas, but one, ‘Canaro’ [see above], was a direct response to visiting the recording studio on the edge of Oxford one day\u00bb. He remembers the day with producer Marta Salogni, and musicians Adrian Utley and Hannah Peel as well as Philip, listening to playbacks of songs. At one point Utley went into the recording room next door and added some guitar sounds to one of the tracks. \u00abI’m used to visiting artists’ studios, but not recording studios, and I was struck by the intimate character of the rooms; the tangle of cabling, even the clothes of the musicians. Philip was wearing a pink shirt, and this colour appears at the top of the painting, along with some oranges that are derived from Hannah’s hair. Adrian got translated into bright red as an equivalent to the extraordinary sounds he generated from his guitar\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n

During our conversation, the name of Stanley Donwood inevitably came up; however, Geddes’ and Donwood’s work is fundamentally different, since the former’s is abstract, whereas the latter is more figurative. Despite Donwood’s deep relation to Radiohead’s visual side, Geddes commented it was never the case of trying to follow a similar line or approach. \u00abFrom its landscape origins, my work has moved toward a more autonomous form of abstract painting; although I acknowledge it might remind you of things in the world. I think of it as improvisations that explore the characteristics of paint, colour relationship and pictorial space. And although I wouldn’t want to lead the viewer, I think of the 4 paintings for this project as having a contained, room space.\u00bb<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Though Geddes is a well-regarded artist in his own field, with a long career in painting, this was Geddes’ first time working with a musician in a project like this. Judging from the excitement in his voice through the phone call, maybe this won’t be the last time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
